Spice Things Up With a Virtual Holiday Scavenger Hunt

The holidays are coming up, and while traditional activities like going to see the lights and watching parades can be fun, it may be time to shake things up. This is especially true if the whole family can't be together in one place this year, and many of the things you love doing together are no longer an option. If this sounds all too familiar, don't lose that Christmas cheer just yet.

Instead, try a virtual holiday scavenger hunt with Alley Kat Adventures. You may have heard about it, and wonder if it's really for you. The good news is - it totally is! The better news is that you can visit with friends and family without having to worry about catching flights, battling traffic, or fighting over the last ham at the grocery store.

WHAT ARE VIRTUAL SCAVENGER HUNTS?

Scavenger hunts are typically done in a set area where you search for clues to hidden objects. But how exactly does a virtual scavenger hunt work when you're stuck in one place?

In this case, you're looking for objects in your location. This can be at your home, workplace, a park, a restaurant, store, or any place where you have reliable internet access and a camera. You'll be looking for specific objects, of course, such as your ugliest pair of socks, but there's more to it when it's a virtual scavenger hunt.

Not only are you going to look for objects, but you'll also be completing challenges too. These can be tailored to the holiday of your choice, and be as fun and wacky as you want.

CAN I DO IT WITH MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS?

This is the great part about virtual scavenger hunts. While it could be a real blast to travel to another city like Chicago, Illinois, it may not be feasible for everyone to come. Rather than having to sit back while everyone else talks about what a great time they had when you couldn't go, a virtual holiday scavenger hunt allows everyone to participate. This means you don't have to worry about finding childcare, as your little ones can participate, and older family members who can't get around like they used to can join in the fun as well.

Virtual holiday scavenger hunts are not limited to your family, either. You can set up one for your workplace, so you and your coworkers can pump up those team-building skills. It will let you see another side to your work family and allow you to express yourself in a whole new way.

WHAT ABOUT COVID?

While COVID is nothing to joke about, you don't have to let it dictate the holidays. With a virtual holiday scavenger hunt, you don't even have to leave your home. You can, of course, if you want to shake things up, but it's perfect for those who aren't too sure about delving into the holiday crowds.

For family members who are at high risk and don't want to travel, it's the perfect way to interact with them. Rather than just staring at the screen, you'll be playing games and having fun together. It may not be the same as seeing each other in person, but you're still making some hilarious memories that you can share for years to come.

WHAT CAN YOU DO ON A VIRTUAL HOLIDAY SCAVENGER HUNT?

For many scavenger hunts, you're looking for things like a coffee mug, or taking a selfie with your pet. This is the jolliest time of the year, however, and you should treat it as such by spicing up your hunt with some holiday theme!

If you're thinking of something to do for Thanksgiving, and everyone has cooked a turkey, try to see who can find the wishbone first. You can also take a selfie of yourself trying to eat the most dressing.

For Christmas, you can go on a scavenger hunt for gifts. Ugly sweaters are fun, as everyone gets to show off their personal style. You can also show off your favorite Christmas gift from years ago, or even have a Nutcracker dance-off.

For Hanukkah, you can take turns showing off the sufganiyot and latkes you fried up for the occasion. You can also see who can eat the most.

HOW DOES A VIRTUAL HOLIDAY SCAVENGER HUNT WORK?

The first thing we’ll do is pick teams. Two teams, to be exact. It doesn't matter if you're paired up with your best friend's new boyfriend who you know nothing about, because you'll be getting to know him better as the game goes on.

Each team will be given a mission. This can be tailored to the holiday you're celebrating, like Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, or Christmas. You'll need to think fast and be ready to let loose, because these games are designed to bring out your silly side.

You'll need to think on your toes, rely on your teammates, and get very inventive. It can be sort of like charades, but much more fun as you're not restricted to drawing pictures or trying to act out weird scenes no one ever gets.

For those with big families or large workplaces, we can host up to 999 guests. While we usually meet up on Zoom, if you give us a heads up, we can host through platforms such as Google Meet, Webex, Microsoft Teams, Blue Jeans, GoToMeeting, and more.

There will be fun little virtual prizes, of course, as well as shout-outs for those who really went outside their comfort zone. The session lasts for an hour, so if you're bogged down with multiple holiday engagements, you don't have to worry about having to leave this meeting to rush to another one.
